Brooklyn Garden Tour kicks off -Urban Farm and Garden Season!
If you know me, you know farms and gardens are my sanctuary. It is the place where you can experience the complete circle of life. From seed to harvest, Farms are life-affirming and the people who grow our food, harvest honey from bees, collect the eggs from hens, and recycle gardens scraps in compost piles that enrich our soil (not dirt) are the front-line workers of the food justice system and I adore them.
Last month, we kicked off our 2023 Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights tour at Brooklyn Queens Land Trust’s Herkimer Garden on Thursday, July 25th. We went to meet the garden coordinator Tamara Bourdeau. We brought along our District 56 summer office interns to meet her garden interns and had in-depth conversations about the effect of climate change, water conservation and usage, the importance of crop rotation. We have more day tours scheduled this month so check in with our volunteer gardeners, to discuss legislation and resources, and buy fresh produce where available! A big thank you to Irene Van Slyke from the BQLT and Sierra Club, for all her work on environmental social justice issues. We had a great time in discussion with her in the garden as well.
On September 12, 2023 for the first time in state history, there will be a Brooklyn Urban Farm Tour featuring the 56th District! I am so excited to host my fellow legislators from upstate New York and welcome our partners from Cornell CALS to the district.
